Introduction

The Bondi 9 is Hoka’s newest max cushion trainer, perfect for daily cruising. As the latest instalment in Hoka’s Bondi series, the v9s truly pick up the pace, improving on multiple aspects of the Bondi v8s.

Midsole

The Hoka Bondi 9s feature upgraded Super Critical EVA foam in the midsole, which is noticeably more responsive than the Compression Moulded EVA of the v8s. The updated foam means that the Bondi 9 provides ultra cushioning and a supportive arch while maintaining a firmer feel.
Weighing in at 309 grams and holding a 2 millimetre increase in stack height over the outgoing model, there is a 5 millimetre drop in the midsole of the v9s. The high stack height across the midsole allows for cushioning throughout and creates a lower drop height, encouraging a more natural stride.
Akin to the previous model, the Bondi 9 features a rocker. The Meta-Rocker present is not overly pronounced, instead lending itself to a controlled ride which complements the natural gait cycle. Runners will find this to be especially noticeable on longer runs as the smoother heel to toe transition is gentler on the joints and allows for greater mileage overall.

Upper

With an upper that is both soft and padded, you will not be disappointed by the comfort of this trainer. The mesh is also very breathable and aids temperature regulation on longer runs. One of the standout features of the upper is the 3D moulded heel counter and collar which supports the ankle and prevents heel slide. A heel flair is present also, and provides strong Achilles stability. On the topic of stability, the traditional lacing system and the solid yet comfortable tongue also create strong lockdown. The v9s fit true to size and have a roomy toe box which accommodate runners with wider feet.

Outsole

The improved outsole features better Durabrasion rubber coverage than the v8s, so fans of Hoka can expect to get more mileage out of the Bondi 9s. The rubber compound is durable and covers the majority of the sole, protecting the EVA foam underneath. The rubber coverage as well as the shoe’s wide footprint provides exceptional traction without compromising the bouncy feel that the midsole creates.

Verdict

Hoka’s dedication to innovation shines through with the Bondi 9. The shoe improves on all aspects of the v8 without straying away from the formula that has defined the Bondi series. While not built for speed, the shoe is an excellent choice for recovery runs and slow to moderate paces. The Bondi 9 checks all boxes, providing a comfortable upper, stable midsole and durable outsole, therefore I’m happy to recommend it as the perfect choice for those looking to up their mileage in comfort and style.
