Tried & Tested: Brooks Ghost 17 with Irish Runner and INTERSPORT Elverys
The Brooks Ghost 17 is the newest iteration in Brooks’ beloved Ghost line.
Introduction:
The Brooks Ghost 17 is the newest iteration in Brooks’ beloved Ghost line. The 17 makes improvements on the previous model while staying true to the winning formula fans have come to expect from the Ghost series.
Midsole:
Like the previous instalment, the 17s feature DNA Loft v3 foam in the midsole. The foam, which is infused with nitrogen gas, is responsive and provides comfort during longer runs. The compound is also durable, preventing air from escaping and dirt from entering the foam, so you should expect to get lots of mileage from the new Ghosts. While the midsole material remains the same as the 16s, the stack height is increased, with an extra 3mm in the forefoot and 1mm in the heel. As a result the shoe comes in at around 14 grams heavier than its predecessor. Despite the weight increase, the change is worth it as it lends to increased comfort and reduces the Ghost’s heel to toe offset. The midsole also does not contain a plate or a rigid rocker which gives the wearer full control over each stride. Overall, the midsole balances comfort and stability well, and is a definite improvement over the previous release.
Upper:
The shoe’s upper consists of a double jacquard air-mesh which is light and breathable. Comfort was clearly a priority in the design of the upper portion as the heel collar is shallow and flares away from the Achilles tendon preventing friction during longer rides. The lacing system is traditional and the tongue is thick and provides strong lockdown. The shoe fits snug on the midfoot but tapers outward in the toe box, providing a locked-in feel with space in all the right places. Brooks’ dedication to comfort in their design of the upper is a shining aspect of the 17s and allows for smooth mileage no matter the distance.
Outsole:
Akin to the 16s, the brand new Ghosts use road tack rubber on the outsole. As fans have come to expect, the coverage is generous. The rubber almost entirely covers the forefoot and only small sections feature exposed foam. However, the lack of coverage in these areas should not present issues due to the durability of the DNA Loft v3 foam of the midsole.
Verdict:
The Ghost 17s continue Brooks’ legacy of consistency and attention to detail. The 17s are fairly neutral, without any flashy features but focus on reliability, durability and comfort. They are perfect for longer runs and lower paces.
