Tried and Tested: Brooks Ghost Max 2 with Irish Runner and Intersport Elverys
Introduction:
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 is the epitome of comfort and cushioning, continuing the legacy of Brooks’ acclaimed Ghost line. For runners seeking consistency and reliability in their footwear, the newly launched Ghost Max 2 is a top contender. With a history of being one of Brooks’ best-selling shoes, the Ghost series shows no sign of losing its momentum (pun intended).
Testing Experience:
Midsole:
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 features the nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT V3 foam, which brings a host of benefits to the table. Fans of the Ghost series will be pleased to know that the stable, slightly firm yet highly cushioned DNA LOFT foam from the Ghost 15 has carried over into this latest model, with a few tweaks for added performance.
In comparison to the recently released Glycerin 21, the Ghost Max 2 uses a slightly reduced amount of midsole foam. This choice doesn’t detract from the shoe's performance but instead contributes to a lightweight and responsive feel. With a 12mm drop, the shoe weighs in at 9.5oz (269.3g), providing a bouncy experience that may be lacking in some of Brooks’ other cushioned neutral shoes.
Upper:
Brooks has struck a perfect balance between breathability and comfort in the upper design of the Ghost Max 2. The shoe features an air mesh upper with a dotted pattern throughout. While slightly thicker than some newer models on the market, Brooks has delivered a comfortable, breathable, and roomy upper that lives up to the expectations set by the Ghost series.
The spacious toe box is a standout feature, complemented by a well-padded heel counter and an external plastic plate to provide maximum Achilles protection. The tongue is also generously padded, ensuring excellent comfort and a secure lockdown during runs.
Outsole:
The RoadTack rubber outsole, also seen in the Glycerin 21, continues to be a mainstay in Brooks’ design. The Ghost Max 2’s outsole is where the shoe truly excels, ticking all the boxes for durability, traction, and stability. While the shoe has a stiffer feel on the ground due to the outsole, the reduced midsole foam keeps it lightweight and bouncy.
The shoe’s wide footprint, coupled with the breathable upper and reliable traction, makes it an excellent choice for long, easy training miles in any season.
Verdict:
Brooks continues to set the standard in stability running shoes, and the Ghost Max 2 is no exception. Whether for easy runs or longer training sessions, this shoe delivers on all fronts. While it may not be the go-to option for speed training or race day, it’s a reliable choice to get you to the starting line in top shape.
With its DNA LOFT V3 foam, breathable upper, and durable outsole, the Ghost Max 2 is a solid pick for everyday training. The shoe fits true to size, offering a roomy toe box that enhances comfort over long distances.
