How to Choose Football Boots: The Complete Buying Guide

Firm Ground (FG) Football Boots

Firm ground football boots are designed primarily for natural grass pitches that are dry to moderately soft.

They generally use moulded studs positioned across the outsole to provide traction on natural grass. You'll find different stud shapes and configurations depending on the boot.

FG boots are one of the most common choices for football played on grass, particularly when pitches aren't heavily waterlogged.

Best for: Natural grass pitches in firm or moderately soft conditions.

Soft Ground (SG) Football Boots

Soft ground football boots are designed for wet, muddy and softer natural grass pitches.

They typically use longer studs, often including removable metal studs, to penetrate softer ground and provide additional traction.

Given Ireland's wet weather and soft winter pitches, SG boots can be particularly useful for players who regularly play on natural grass through autumn and winter.

Best for: Wet, muddy and soft natural grass.

Astro Turf Football Boots

Astro turf football boots are designed specifically for artificial turf surfaces.

Instead of the longer studs found on FG and SG boots, astro boots typically use numerous shorter rubber studs across the outsole. This distributes pressure across the foot and provides traction on harder artificial surfaces.

If you regularly train or play on astro turf, choose footwear specifically designed for that surface rather than assuming your grass boots will do the same job.

Best for: Astro turf and appropriate synthetic football surfaces.
