Intersport Elverys Recycling Centre

Intersport Elverys take sustainability seriously.

As part of our Sustainability Strategy 2030, we have invested over €1 million in a purpose-built recycling centre located at our Castlebar HQ.

This recycling centre will play a major role in helping Intersport Elverys reach our ultimate goal of becoming a zero-waste and fully circular business.

The centre and our waste management staff are equipped to correctly, safely and efficiently recycle the large volumes of cardboard, plastic polystyrene, straps, paper and timber waste that passes through our business on a daily basis.

In order to further reduce our footprint on the planet, recyclable waste is transported from many of our stores nationwide, back to the recycling centre where it is handled responsible before being collected by many of specialised Waste Management partners, such as Envirogreen.

Check out our 2022 results below.

Wood Shredder

Our industrial sized wood shredder helps us reduce the volume of timber pallets that arrives into our distribution centre on a daily basis in an eco friendly manner.

This recycled waste can be converted into valuable resources such as wood chips, biomass and fuel sticks.

If a pallet is now deemed reusable, then it will be shredded for further circular use.

Pallet repair, reuse and recycling can be hugely impactful to the environment according to some research: https://www.palletconsultants.com/blog/why-wooden-pallets-are-good-for-the-environment

Plastic Recyclers

Ireland produced over 1 million tonnes of packaging waste in 2020, for the fourth year in a row, according to the epa.ie

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to the environment right now and we are committed to ensuring we make our impact known in plastic recycling.

In our Recycling Centre, we separate our mixed plastics, clear plastics and hard plastics individually before compounding into large bales for collection by our specialist waste management partners.

We also separate and bale our plastic strapping waste.

Plastic products made from recycled plastic include bin liners and carrier bags and then flower pots, by our partner, Envirogreen.

Polystyrene Recycling

Polystyrene is made up of 98 per cent air and 2 per cent plastic and thus has a high volume/low weight ratio, so even a small quantity of polystyrene can rapidly fill a bin or container.

Our Polystyrene Compactor shreds, heats, compacts and reforms the waste polystyrene material into a compact briquette fit for resale and re-use in housing insulation locally and nationally.

Polystyrene is a very common material but difficult to recycle, and because it is over 95% air, it makes an excellent insulation material.

After we bale our waste polystyrene it is taken away and specially handled by our specialists waste management partners.

Cardboard and Paper

Ireland created 1.1 million tonnes of packaging waste in 2019, with paper and cardboard showing the largest increases in volume.

Ireland's paper and cardboard reclamations achieve a 79% recycling rate as a result of the public's and local businesses', such as our Intersport Elverys, commitment to recycling, according to selectra.ie

Plant fibers are compressed and dried to create paper. Although bamboo, reeds, hemp, and many other plant-based materials can also be used to create this pulp, trees are the primary source of it.

A thick sheet of paper, or numerous layers of paper adhered together, is what makes cardboard.

A thick padded cardboard sheet is created in the case of corrugated cardboard by adhering two thick layers of paper to either side of a corrugated sheet of thick paper.

We are equipped with our own cardboard baling compactor and paper shredding machine, meaning we can correctly handle all paper and cardboard waste coming into our business, thus reducing our carbon footprint on the planet immensely.

Renewable Energy/Carbon Emissions

As well as reducing waste on the environment, our recycling centre possess a number of Electric Vehicle charging points which are usable by our staff to help reduce carbon emissions and promote the usage of EVs.

To ease energy consumption of the plant, 11.250kwp worth of PV solar panels have been installed to help power the machines. This Clean Renewable Energy is delivers over 50% of total power usage of the Recycling Centre.

A solar PV system approximately 20sq.m can generate 2,600kWh of electricity a year, which is over 40% of the average electricity demand of an Irish home (seai.ie).
